Non-Surgical Facelifts | Look Lovely London

Non-Surgical Facelift

It’s a common misconception that we need to take an ‘all or nothing’ approach to ageing. While facelifts certainly have their place in the world of cosmetic procedures, there are many more alternative treatments that stand between doing nothing at all and going ‘under the knife’.

Non-surgical facelifts are just as they sound: aesthetic treatments that offer tangible results without requiring you to see a plastic surgeon, undergo anaesthesia, and deal with weeks of post-operative healing.

These treatments promise fast yet long-lasting and natural-looking results that specifically target some of the most common signs of ageing, including loose and sagging skin, loss of contour and volume, a more textured appearance, and lost collagen.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Facelifts: Why Choose a Non-Surgical Alternative?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking surgery. In some instances, it does represent the best choice for the patient, offering more drastic results that may be beyond the scope of a non-surgical treatment.

But, for so many patients, a surgical procedure represents an unnecessary extreme – one that risks unnatural results, although this does depend on the skill and experience of the plastic surgeon.

Avoiding surgery in favour of a non-surgical facelift brings benefits like

  • Avoiding anaesthesia and the risks associated with all surgical procedures
  • Shorter treatment times – many of our patients visit us on their lunch breaks, or during a day out in the city.
  • Reduced risk of infection thanks to less invasive methods
  • Shorter healing times
  • Lower cost
  • Natural results
  • No scarring
  • Versatility – since these treatments yield semi-permanent or temporary results, they are far better suited to patients who would rather take a more measured approach to aesthetic enhancements
  • Treatment options that work with your body – for instance, by boosting collagen production – rather than against it

Why Are There So Many Non-Surgical Facelifts Options?

In short, because there are so many different patients out there!

Anti-ageing and facial rejuvenation represent a very exciting discipline. Each year, experts from around the world pioneer new treatments that really target specific areas of concern, yielding stronger outcomes while minimising invasiveness and recovery. This is fantastic for ensuring there is always a range of treatment options, rather than attempting to achieve natural results with a ‘one size fits all’ set of treatments.

Of course, this can mean that it’s a little daunting trying to work out which treatment – or combination of treatments – is right for you.

At Look Lovely London, our passion lies in creating the best possible treatment plan for every patient – one that is tailored to their goals and expectations, their concerns, and their long-term plans. We are always happy to set up a consultation and talk through the list of options until you’re happy.

That said, it always helps to do a little research ahead of time. Below, you can find out more about some of our most popular non-surgical facelift treatments.

The Morpheus 8

What it Targets: Any part of the body that is suffering from reduced collagen production, which leads to a loss of plumpness and a looser, less elastic appearance. The face, tummy, thighs, and buttocks represent the most common treatment areas. Click here to find out more about Morpheus 8.

How it works: This is what’s known as a ‘fractional skin treatment’, which uses radiofrequency microneedling to target specific areas of concern. It’s less invasive than a laser treatment.

The Results: Improved skin texture and reduced wrinkles. This treatment is great for targeting crow’s feet and jowls, but also wider-spread concerns like cellulite and stretchmarks on larger areas of the body.

Treatment Timeline:

  • The treatment takes a little over an hour, as we will need to numb the treatment area. You can expect to be in and out in less than 90 minutes.
  • Post-treatment, you should avoid putting any products on or around the treatment area for 48 hours. After that, you can go back to normal.
  • We generally recommend 3 courses of treatment, with results lasting between 1 and 3 years depending on the scope of the treatment plan, where we’re starting from, and your age.

Dermal Fillers

What it Targets: Parts of the face that are beginning to appear hollow, inelastic, or wrinkled – particularly around the eyes and mouth. This is due to a loss of our body’s natural collagen stores. Tear troughs, lost definition along the jawline, structural defects along the bridge of the nose, and deeper nasolabial folds (smile lines) are just some of the areas dermal fillers can treat.

Our full guide to dermal fillers is available here.

How it Works: Dermal filler, when injected into targeted areas, leads to a fresh build-up of moisture that re-pumps the skin, leading to a more youthful look.

The Results: You’ll see a change in your appearance straightaway – better skin texture, re-plumped cheeks and tear troughs, and better contouring depending on where the filler has been injected.

Treatment Timeline:

  • The treatment takes about 40 minutes, which is why so many of our patients pop in during their lunch breaks.
  • You might see some bruising in the days that follow your treatment, but these will fade within a week to 10 days.
  • We recommend you return for additional treatment within a year to 18 months in order to maintain the best possible results.

HarmonyCa

What it Treats: Wrinkles, fine lines, lost volume, and skin inelasticity in the face.

How it Works: By combining filler with calcium hydroxyapatite, the HarmonyCa treatment offers the best of both worlds: a firmer, plumper appearance and reduced wrinkles, along with increased collagen production.

We’ve got a full guide to HarmonyCa if you’re interested to learn more.

The Results: A longer-lasting and very natural-looking rejuvenation of the face and jowls. HarmonyCa replaces lost volume by supporting your skin’s in-built ability to stay plump and firm.

Treatment Timeline:

  • Treatment is very quick and can take as little as 30 minutes.
  • You may feel a little tender in the treatment areas a few hours after leaving the clinic, but there’s no downtime, and any pain should subside within 24-48 hours.
  • Results will last around 18 months, with gradual improvement over the first 3 months.

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)

What it Targets: Parts of the face, chin, and neckline that have lost definition and require re-sculpting in order to bring out your natural beauty. If you feel as though your bone structure is starting to disappear beneath sagging skin and pockets of fat, this is a great treatment option to consider.

Find out more about HIFU treatments.

How it Works: These ultrasounds encourage the skin to do its own job, just more effectively! It targets three subdermal layers of skin to produce more collagen without introducing any fillers or synthetic collagen into the body. This is what leads to such natural-looking results.

The Results: It’s you, just revitalised. If you’ve noticed a difference in your appearance over the last few years, then the main culprit is your body’s reduced collagen production. By giving that process a boost, you’ll start to see (and feel) yourself again.

Treatment Timeline

  • HIFU takes less than an hour – around 45 minutes for most patients.
  • Recovery is minimal, with no downtime.
  • Results will last up to 18 months, with gradual improvement over those first 3 or 4 months post-treatment.

No Needle Facelift

What it Targets: Reduced collagen production and loose skin, along with redness, blemishes, and puffiness. This treatment approaches the signs of ageing and stress from multiple angles at once.

Read our guide to no needle facelifts.

How it Works: The no needle facelift combines four separate treatments: HIFU, Forma (more on that below), LED Light Therapy and Lymphatic Drainage. HIFU and Forma target lost collagen production, while LED Light Therapy works wonders for the appearance of wrinkles, blemishes, redness, and acne, and draining the lymphatic system targets that puffy, tired appearance that lingers even after a good night’s rest.

The Results: This treatment targets the full list of concerns, from the concrete signs of ageing like wrinkles and sagging, to the more superficial (yet stubborn) signs like poor skin texture and puffiness.

Treatment Timeline:

  • The treatment itself only requires an hour of your time.
  • There is no downtime, and many patients choose to get the treatment within a day or two of a big event thanks to the instant results it offers.
  • Results last somewhere between 6 – 9 months before further treatments are required.

Forma

What it Targets: Any part of the body that stands to benefit from lifting and contouring, from the face to the arms, and parts of the body that exercise alone just can’t target. It’s also effective for concerns like hyperpigmentation and textured skin.

Click herefor more information on Forma.

How it Works: With radio frequencies, we can target those subdermal layers – not just to stimulate natural collagen production, but also to cause a contraction of the underlying tissue.

The Results: Consistent, even results in the treatment area. Skin appears firmer and tighter, more evenly toned and textured – and, in the face, that tired, lethargic appearance that can be so hard to shift, even with a good diet and exercise plan, is replaced by a more youthful glow.

Treatment Timeline:

  • The treatment itself takes as little as 30 minutes, although initial appointments will take slightly longer as we walk you through your personal treatment plan.
  • There is no downtime following this treatment – you may notice some redness or swelling for 24-48 hours post-treatment, but many patients experience no after-effects at all.
  • Results can last for 1-2 years following a course of treatment.

Sculptra

What it Targets: Facial skin that has lost – or is beginning to lose – its structural integrity. Fine lines, lost volume, loose skin and jowling, provided it’s not too advanced.

Take a look at our Sculptra guide.

How it Works: By injecting Poly-L-Lactic Acid into the skin. While it may sound very scientific, this polymer is produced naturally by the body but, as our metabolic processes slow with age, our skin starts to show signs of slowed production. An injection of PLLA heals those subdermal layers and boosts collagen production as a result.

The Results: Subtle and natural, but significant enough for you to notice a real difference in the mirror. This treatment is all about bringing out your natural beauty instead of working against it with extreme measures. For that reason alone, it’s a great option if you’re new to the world of facial rejuvenation.

Treatment Timeline:

  • The treatment itself takes around 45 minutes.
  • Recovery can take up to 10 days in some cases, but this will only present as mild bruising.
  • Results can last more than two years, with 86% of patients reporting continued effects after 25 months. For beginners, we’d recommend 2 or 3 rounds of treatment in those first few months just to create a strong foundation for longer-lasting results.

Non-Surgical Facelift FAQs

What is the most popular alternative to facelift surgery?

Dermal fillers are seeing a huge surge in popularity all over the world. In 2019, around 4.3 million treatments involved dermal fillers, which equates to just over 30% of all non-surgical treatments.

How Old Do I Have to Be to Get Anti-Ageing Treatments?

There’s absolutely no age requirement for adults seeking treatment – and, for some treatments, starting sooner rather than later can be a big benefit when it comes to laying the right foundations for future treatments. The signs of ageing begin to take hold (albeit subtly) when we hit our mid-twenties, and more patients are seeking to start addressing their areas of concern earlier than you might think.

What are the risks?

Non invasive face lift treatments pose very few risks compared with surgical alternatives. While we will make sure you are aware of any risks specific to your treatment plan, cosmetic treatments carry a low risk of infection in the injection site. This risk is minimised when the clinic follows high standards for health and safety and ensures proper training in all techniques – something we take very seriously here at Look Lovely London.

How Much is a Non Surgical Facelift?

Non Surgical Facelift (HIFU)

HIFU: the ultimate non-surgical face lift!

The quest for a way to look more youthful is never ending, one of the concerns I hear about the most is definitely regarding the lower face.  Sagging of the skin, the drooping of jowls, loss of definition in the jawline and cheekbones – to name but a few.  It can be very overwhelming (and sudden!) and feel like a surgical facelift is the only solution.

Fortunately, being part of such a tech savvy generation there are now many ways to reverse ageing, in a much more accessible, non-invasive and safer way than your standard surgical procedure.

What is HIFU & how does it work?

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound or HIFU, is a revolutionary non-invasive treatment that is quickly becoming one o the most popular options for those looking to improve their appearance and achieve a more youthful look. HIFU uses high-frequency sound waves to heat and cause trauma in a specific area of the face or body, making it a safe and effective option for addressing a variety of skin concerns.

One of the key benefits of HIFU is that it is a non-invasive procedure, meaning that there are no incisions or anaesthesia required. This makes it an ideal option for those who want to improve their appearance without the risks and downtime associated with surgical procedures. Additionally, HIFU is a quick and easy treatment that can be completed in a single session, with minimal recovery time required.

Another benefit of HIFU is that the results can be long-lasting, with many people seeing visible improvement for several months or even years. It is an excellent alternative for those who are not ready for more invasive procedures such as a surgical facelift and want to maintain the result for a longer time.

Overall, HIFU is a safe and effective treatment that can help you achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance without the risks and downtime associated with surgical procedures.

What to expect on the day of your HIFU treatment?

  1. Consultation: Before the treatment, you will have a consultation with one of our skilled practitioners to discuss your concerns and goals, and to ensure that HIFU is the right treatment option for you. They will also give you an idea of what to expect during and after the procedure.
  2. Preparing the skin: Your skin will be cleaned and prepared before the procedure. This will include the application of an ultrasound gel to the target areas to facilitate the transmission of ultrasonic energy.  Your practitioner will draw a map and numbers on your face of where and how deep the treatment will go depending on your own personal anatomy.
  3. The treatment: The HIFU machine is placed on the skin, a button Is pressed, making a slight zapping sound, you may feel a little heat during this where the machine is delivering focused ultrasonic energy to the specific area of the skin, where the tightening and rejuvenation is happening.
  4. This process is repeated as necessary based on your desired results and skin condition. Once the treatment is complete your skin with be cleansed of any excess gel, aftercare will then be applied to protect and moisturise the skin.
  5. The final step: Follow up with your practitioner for evaluation of the results, including any necessary maintenance treatments. This is usually 3 months post treatment.

How will HIFU help you and who is a suitable candidate?

HIFU is suitable for anyone looking for a non-invasive way to improve the appearance of ageing skin, including fine lines and wrinkles, without undergoing surgery. It is often recommended for people with mild to moderate skin laxity who want to achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance. You can expect HIFU to help with anything from improving skin texture, firmness, facial contouring, enhancing skin elasticity, and help to reduce any fine lines. It is important to note that results will vary from person to person and may depend on factors such as skin type, the extent of skin damage and the number of treatments received.

What is the downtime and after care of HIFU?

The downtime of HIFU can vary slightly depending on the person, unlike a surgical facelift taking months to heal and a long list of aftercare to follow, HIFU can range from a few hours to a few days. Some common side effects include redness, slight swelling and mild discomfort in the treated area, but these usually resolve quickly. Patients are able to resume normal activities soon after the procedure but are advised to avoid strenuous activities and excessive heat exposure for a few days. It is important to follow the aftercare provided by the medical provider to minimize downtime and optimise results.

Hifu or Ultherapy?

Ultherapy and HIFU are essentially the same treatment, as they are both forms of focused ultrasound. Ultherapy however is the older technology, and we use the Ultraformer 3 which is the more modern device. Although Ultherapy does have ultrasound incorporated, this is essentially the only difference, and when seeing a skilled practitioner is not necessary. Our practitioners have  actually worked with both devices, and we chose Hifu as the sessions were less painful/uncomfortable and the treatment appointments took much less time.

The Non-Invasive Cosmetic Treatments Rivalling Surgery in 2020

In the very early days of cosmetic treatments, those who wished to reverse the signs of ageing, or replenish lost elasticity within the skin, may have felt that the only way to achieve obvious results was to opt for a surgical procedure.

Now, however, the tables have turned, and there are many innovative non-surgical options that offer an alternative to long and potentially painful recoveries, unnecessary anaesthesia, hospital stays, and the high costs of surgery.

The best results are those that are subtle, yet palpable; they will work with your natural beauty, facial structure, and distinctive characteristics, and they will not leave you squinting into the mirror, searching for signs of improvement. You will see a change, and others will notice it without jumping to the conclusion that you have ‘had work done’.

More than ever before, patients are realising the benefits of working in ways that harmonise with the body, rather than putting it through the stress and strain of surgical procedures. For example, using gentle fillers that are made of hyaluronic acid, the main component found in human collagen, to give natural plumpness and hydrate the skin without downtime.

How Do Non-Invasive Cosmetic Treatments Work?

No two treatments work in the same way; we are able to utilise a wide array of technologies and treatments, which can be used to target particular areas of the face and body in different ways.

A number of treatments seek to enhance the body’s stores of collagen, which is naturally lost as we grow older. Some will reintroduce it into the secondary layers of skin, while others work to stimulate the body into replenishing its own stores naturally.

Here are just a few of the most successful skin tightening and revitalising treatments, anti-wrinkle treatments, and non-surgical facelift treatments of 2020 – and how they are able to compete with the world of invasive cosmetic surgery.

The HIFU Non-Surgical Facelift

HIFU, high intensity focused ultrasound, is a relatively new skin tightening technique that achieves astounding results as a non-surgical facelift for patients bothered by wrinkles, sagging, lost-elasticity, and definition around the face and neck.

Unlike a traditional, surgical facelift, HIFU does not require any cuts to be made into the skin; instead, it works by rapidly heating the layers of skin that sit beneath the surface of your face. In response, the cells begin to produce collagen and reverse the signs of ageing from within.

Initial results will be noticeable straight away, though further progress will occur in the months that follow and should last for up to eighteen months. While some patients opt for a second procedure with the HIFU device around three months after their first appointment, this is not necessary for everyone.

Any discomfort is minimal and does not require a local anaesthetic or numbing injection. Since no incisions are made, there will be no scarring or bandaging required.

HIFU Treatment Cost: £600 – £1200, depending on the area being treated.

HIFU Recovery Period: None.

Dermal Fillers

Fillers are one of the most popular non-surgical face treatments for men and women of all ages, and they can be used to reintroduce fullness, smooth out fine lines, and improve definition in every area of the face. The fillers themselves are able to mimic human collagen; they can be targeted towards specific areas and produce incredibly natural-looking results that do not shift or migrate away from the treatment area.

This is a wonderful choice for anyone looking to reintroduce a touch of plumpness into areas of the face that may have begun to take on a hollow or ‘sagging’ appearance.

Dermal fillers do dissolve over time but, depending on the area being treated, they can last for up to eighteen months before requiring a top-up procedure. What’s more, the use of dermal fillers can prompt the body to begin replenishing its own collagen, which can mean that you will see lasting improvement, even as the fillers begin to dissolve.

Dermal fillers can also be used in a ‘liquid rhinoplasty’ and can smooth out the nose’s profile to create a straighter profile, and lift the tip without creating any incisions, or damaging the cartilage in the process.

While any discomfort will be minor, you can have a numbing cream applied to the area a short while before the injections are made.

Dermal Fillers Cost: Typically between £300 – £785, depending on the amount of filler needed, and what areas of the face are being treated.

Dermal Fillers Recovery Period: 1-2 weeks for minor bruising.

Profhilo

The benefits of hyaluronic acid are well-recognised, and almost half of the hyaluronic acid that occurs naturally in your body is contained within the skin tissue, just beneath the upper layer. It is responsible for hydrating the skin and maintaining a firm, youthful, healthy appearance.

Some of the most popular facial creams and serums on the market today boast hyaluronic acid as a key ingredient. Whilst these creams claim to deliver hyaluronic acid into the skin the actual amounts reaching the important lower layers are negligible.

Profhilo involves injections to target five specific areas in the cheeks and chin area, offering an excellent way to deliver the goodness into the right layers of the skin. This moisturising injection will rejuvenate tired or sunken skin, improving texture, and restoring vitality to your face. You’ll be glowing 2 weeks after the treatment.

Unlike dermal fillers, Profhilo will diffuse beneath the skin. This process will occur shortly after the procedure has been completed and will enable the benefits to be felt across a wider area. There will be a slight recovery time as the small ‘lumps’ caused by this diffusion dissipate, but this will typically disappear within 24 hours.

Profhilo Cost: £500 for two spaced four weeks apart.

Profhilo Recovery Time: 3 – 24 hours.

The PDO Thread Lift

The collagen that we begin to lose as we pass our mid-twenties is necessary for maintaining firmness and structure within the face. By the age of thirty, this change and loss of collagen will begin to be apparent with sagging and the appearance of jowls.  PDO thread lift offers a remarkable alternative to surgery and it can reposition structures back to the more youthful days, and boost collagen within the face.

Rather than making incisions into the skin, incredibly thin threads can be inserted just beneath the surface layer to create a fine, supportive ‘mesh’ that supports the skin’s natural elasticity. It will also encourage the skin to produce more collagen as a result, creating further support.

The threads can be placed in a number of different positions, depending on the results you would like to achieve. They dissolve after around six months, but the results remain for between one year and eighteen months.

PDO Thread Lift Cost: Typically between £350 – £850, depending on the area being treated.

PDO Thread Lift Recovery Time: A week to ten days, for bruising.

Aqualyx Fat Dissolving Injections

Despite the proliferation of innovative new facial treatments, many people are left wondering whether liposuction is the only effective treatment available to shift small ‘pockets’ of fat.

Aqualyx is a gentle, non-invasive alternative to liposuction, so avoids anaesthesia and a prolonged – and potentially painful – recovery time. These injections can be performed at the clinic within 20 minutes and may be used to dissolve pockets of fat in the thighs, abdomen, arms, and the chin area.

The primary ingredient in Aqualyx, deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring substance capable of dissolving fat membranes and prompting those stubborn areas to break down gradually. While it may require more treatments than a single liposuction procedure, typically up to 3 sessions it will also lead to tighter, firmer results than liposuction is able to offer.

Aqualyx Cost: For the chin, £350 for the initial session. For areas of the body, £450 for the initial session. Subsequent sessions are discounted.

Aqualyx Recovery Time: One week without strenuous activity as bruising/swelling eases, and three more weeks for a complete recovery.

The Look Lovely London Patient Promise

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Injections involving the botulinum toxin are incredibly popular. They can be used to target many areas within the face and neck known to suffer the most from the visible signs of ageing. It works by blocking the signals to the muscles in the face to contract, therefore reducing the ‘tug’ on the skin. Your face will feel smoother and tighter with less fine lines appearing.

Results can last for up to six months and take one to two weeks to become apparent. You won’t wake up and have a completely smooth face, the results gradually develop over 14 days giving more natural changes. Some of the most bothersome areas, such as the delicate wrinkles around the eyes and strong lines in-between the eyebrows as well as ageing muscles in the neck  (platysmal bands) can be targeted in order to effectively ‘reverse’ the signs of ageing.

The procedure itself does not require any downtime, and you can return to work immediately after, although slight bruising may occur at the site of the injection.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections Cost: Between £175- 380 depending on the area being treated.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections Recovery Time: Minimal to no recovery time needed. The results are seen at 2 weeks.

The Ultimate Guide To HIFU Facelifts

Now more than ever, we’re searching for ways to get a ‘natural’ look, and take control of our appearance. While skin ageing is an entirely natural process, so too is taking steps to look – and feel our very best, wherever we are in life.

Over the past decade, the HIFU facelift has become extremely popular for its ability to achieve natural-looking anti-ageing results in the face, jawline and neck. It is hailed as offering a non-invasive, non-surgical facelift to those who seek to revitalise loose or sagging skin without the need to take drastic measures.

HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is unique in its ability to ‘penetrate’ the superficial layers of the skin without the use of needles or surgery. It creates impressive results by merely stimulating the body to work on rebuilding its own structural support.

But, even though it rivals the long-established surgical facelift as a lower-risk and cost alternative, many people remain unsure quite what a HIFU treatment entails. If you are wondering whether a HIFU facelift is right for you, then find out everything you need to know — from the science to the side effects — in our ultimate guide below.

What is a HIFU Facelift?

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound or HIFU treatments offer a non-invasive alternative to the surgical facelift.

As we grow older, we begin to lose collagen and elastin in our skin. These naturally-occurring proteins are mainly responsible for the youthful definition, structural support, and elasticity we all take for granted in our younger years.

The natural ageing process starts in our twenties, as the skin becomes less saturated with these proteins. Eventually, we will begin to notice a loss of volume, particularly around the eyes and cheeks, and ‘loose’ or sagging skin. For many people, the jawline will start to appear less defined, which can cause jowls to appear, or lead to new pockets of fat forming under the chin.

The HIFU facelift is a relatively new cosmetic treatment option for those who wish to reintroduce elasticity and tightness to the face, without the need for surgery.

It utilises focused ultrasound energy to stimulate deep into the layers of skin integral to the structural support of our faces, using heat. This procedure causes a minimal amount of damage to the cells, which react by producing new collagen and elastin within the structural support layers of the skin. By triggering the body to focus on renewing this foundational layer, the results are impressive, achieving facial rejuvenation without ever appearing unnatural or overly drastic.

Following a HIFU facelift, patients should expect to see immediate improvement, which will progress over the following three months as the body continues to replenish its stores of collagen and elastin.

Who is a suitable candidate?

The HIFU facelift, also known as Non-Surgical Facelift, is an ideal treatment for anyone experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity. A term used to describe the loose skin we all begin to see around the brow line, eyelids, cheeks and jawline.

As such, it has proven an incredibly popular procedure among patients aged 30+ who wish to achieve firmer skin, elasticity and contouring in the face and neck as the natural ageing process takes place. This nonsurgical skin tightening procedure is ideal for fine lines and skin lifting and encourages overall facial rejuvenation.

As with any cosmetic procedure, the results will always vary depending on the individual’s facial structure, age, and lifestyle, which is why consulting with your practitioner before the appointment is so necessary. They have a deep understanding of facial anatomy and will be able to come up with a plan for treatment that is perfectly tailored to your face.

The differences between HIFU and a Surgical Facelift

While HIFU treatments have gained considerable traction with men and women over the last few years. Surgical facelifts, also known as a rhytidectomy procedure, have been a popular option for decades.

We’ll compare both options to help you decide which procedure aligns best with your skin tightening aims and expectations.

Surgical Facelift Procedure

A typical surgical facelift will be completed by making an incision into the temples, behind the ear, and in the lower scalp. Anything above the eyes is known as a brow lift.

With these incisions are made, surgeons can then remove excess skin and effectively ‘drawback’ the remaining skin to create a firmer, tighter look in the face and jawline. The procedure typically takes several hours to complete.

As this is an invasive treatment, the patient will be placed under general anaesthesia, and will usually be required to spend a night in the hospital to ensure there are no complications.

During their initial recovery for a surgical facelift, patients will be prescribed pain medication to mitigate any discomfort. They will need to attend a follow-up appointment with their surgeon to have the incision checked, and dressings reapplied.

HOFI non surgical facelift treatment

 HIFU Non Surgical Facelift Procedure

A High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) facelift typically takes under an hour to complete, and no anaesthesia is required. Those who have undergone a HIFU skin tightening treatment sometimes notice a light, warm prickling sensation in the skin.

Following the completion of the procedure, patients are free to resume normal activities and should only expect to see minor side effects. Rarely bruising and swelling is seen and will typically subside around two weeks into your recovery. The full effects of the facelift typically take up to 3 months to become fully visible.

Unlike surgical facelifts, HIFU side effects are limited to mild swelling in the areas treated — and many patients experience no negative after-effects at all. As such, the treatment requires no downtime, which means you can even have it done on your lunch break. You will begin to see results as soon as you leave the clinic, and this improvement will continue over the following months.

The long term results

The longevity of surgical facelifts varies quite drastically depending on the type of procedure patients choose. A full facelift offers the most drastic results, as it targets a wider area; generally, the results are reported to last up to fifteen years following the operation.

A mini facelift will target specific areas, such as sagging in the lower cheeks, jawline and neck. They don’t last quite as long as a full facelift – about seven years.

HIFU nonsurgical skin tightening procedures do not offer such long term results. A single session should be expected to last for between twelve and eighteen months. However, they do provide a lower-risk and cost alternative to surgery, with a major price difference having far less of an impact on your purse. In addition to this, the noninvasive skin tightening procedure provides much more natural results than a traditional surgical facelift.

Risks to consider

Surgical Facelifts

As is always the case with surgical procedures, there are several risks to be aware of if you are considering a more invasive treatment.

Considerable progress has been made since the advent of the surgical facelift. But, every surgeon and patient are different, so it’s impossible to guarantee that complications will not occur and that you will be happy with the results.

Bleeding, infection and nerve damage, while relatively rare, are some of the risks to consider.

For some patients, a surgical facelift can result in an asymmetrical appearance or visible surgical scars at the edges of the face. If this is the case, the patient may need a second procedure to correct the problem, which will require more anaesthesia and lengthen recovery time.

Non Surgical Facelifts

The HIFU facelift, on the other hand, aims to ‘reverse’ signs of ageing encouraging the body to restore its own natural structural support. Which circumvents the risks of patients experiencing a drastic change to their appearance. What’s more, the procedure itself is very safe and doesn’t carry the same risks of anaesthesia, bleeding and infection as surgery. Patients may experience a slight tingling sensation during the procedure, with mild redness directly after, but the mild side-effects subsides over a short period of time.

Does HIFU damage the skin over time?

The HIFU machine works by creating microdamage in the foundational layers of skin, which triggers a natural, ‘healing’ response within the body. This damage, however, is not detectable on the surface of the skin, as the ultrasound energy only affects the tissue deep below the superficial layers.

Patients can return for top-up treatments without experiencing any damage or deterioration in the skin. Since the procedure does not require the use of needles or incisions, even minor short-term damage and the risk of infection and scarring is avoided.

How much does a HIFU treatment cost?

Not only does HIFU offer a non-invasive alternative to other popular skin tightening treatments, but it’s also much cheaper.

As you consider this treatment, bear in mind that it is not as long-lasting as a full surgical facelift – the cost for which can be in the region of £10,000. So many patients do choose to return a year or so later for a top-up treatment.

Here are our current HIFU prices – you can see our full range of treatment prices here.

  • Full Face and Neck with 12 week repeat top up treatment £1,200
  • Go Cardless – an initial deposit of £500 and then 4 monthly payments of £175
  • Neck, Jaw and Chin with a 12 week repeat top up treatment £650
  • Eyes or per-oral area including a 12 week repeat top up treatment £550

What to look for in a good practitioner

Choosing to undergo any anti-ageing treatment is an extremely personal experience. It’s important that you feel totally comfortable with your aesthetician long before you actually go through with the procedure.

You need to know they will listen to and understand your expectations and concerns. You also need to be sure that they have the skills, qualifications and certifications necessary to achieve the results they promise.

If you need more help, you can read our six-point guide on how to choose the right aesthetic clinic.

Ask yourself the following questions before, during and after your initial consultation.

Are you happy with their before/after photos?

Nothing offers better insight into a clinic’s calibre than their portfolio of past clients. Look for consistency in the lighting, angle and facial expression. A worthwhile practitioner will have reliable results that speak for themselves, and won’t need to rely on photographic trickery to impress future clients.

Do they offer the latest technology?

Anti-ageing treatments are part of a rapidly evolving industry, which means that new techniques and technologies are forever bursting onto the scene, and offering evermore effective results.

Finding an aesthetician ready to invest time and money into keeping up to date with the latest in HIFU facial lifting technology and who offers invaluable insight into their commitment to achieving the best results with their patients.

The equipment we use is the Ultraformer III, an FDA (Food & Drug Administration) medical-grade device. In our opinion, this is the best in the industry offering the most painless and effective results.

How good is their follow-up care?

For your own peace of mind, even the most minor procedure should include an exceedingly high-level of aftercare with the same practitioner who administered the treatment.

It will allow you to feel more confident before the procedure, and ensure that you’ve got the best possible results from your treatment – and your money. A practitioner who works from a permanent clinic is much more likely to be able to provide consistent aftercare to their patients.

Did you feel heard at your consultation?

Even if you’ve been through the process before, it is easy to feel apprehensive before a treatment. We all want to look and feel our best, and entrusting something so important to someone else is, understandably, a nerve-wracking experience.

Use your consultation to build a rapport with the practitioner. Make sure your expectations are understood, and your concerns have been addressed.

If you are made to feel rushed, talked-over, or pushed into something that you are not sure about, then be prepared to walk away and find someone you can trust.

Are they experienced?

As with any skillset or vocation, performing anti-ageing treatments to the highest possible standard requires a great deal of expertise and hands-on experience. The right practitioner will have years’ of practical knowledge, training and successful procedures behind them.

Find Out The Secret Treatment To Reducing The Appearance of Jowls That Celebrities Don’t Want You To Know…

If you’re unhappy with your skin looking tired and older than you’d like, then we recommend our non-surgical facelift; the only non-invasive treatment that lifts and tightens your skin, without any downtime!

One of the most common signs of ageing that can really impact a person’s confidence is sagging jowls. This is the sagging skin that begins to form along your jawline which is caused by a loss of facial volume over time.

A non-surgical facial provides instant results and is one of the most effective treatments for jowel removal without surgery.

What To Expect From A Non-Surgical Treatment For Sagging Jowels

Before treatment you will need to come in for a consultation, where your skin will be assessed and you will be able to discuss your concerns.

Our Master Aesthetician, Christal, will carry out the non-surgical facial treatment. Christal will begin by prepping the skin and applying an ultrasound gel to the jowel area.

It is the ultrasound that works to stimulate collagen production in the treated area, giving your skin a more youthful and tightened appearance.

Will I Feel Any Pain Or Discomfort?

The high-intensity focused ultrasound used for this procedure focuses on the intended area to deposit high levels of energy in order to stimulate collagen production in the deeper levels of skin. You will feel the ultrasound working, but this shouldn’t cause any pain, just perhaps some mild discomfort.

What Happens After The Treatment?

Christal will go through what to expect over the few days following your appointment. There is no downtime with a non-surgical facial so any recommended aftercare will be minimal.

Your skin may look a little flushed straight after treatment and appear slightly puffy, but this will not last long and you will be able to carry on with your day as soon as treatment is finished.

We can also offer protected time slots for our more vulnerable clients so they have little or no contact with other people during their visit.

Our staff are rigorous about cleaning and handwashing. We disinfect treatment rooms and couches after every client, wearing gloves and masks if needed. We also use Cleanisept to prepare your skin before treatment – this is one of the best antimicrobial agents available to reduce the risk of infection.

We want to put your mind at ease that we have taken all the precautions to offer you a lovely and safe experience at the clinic.

We understand you may want to bring a friend or family member along to your appointment for moral support. However, in these unprecedented times, we ask you to attend alone to reduce the risk of transmission.
