Sclerotherapy Treatment Timeline
Consultation
Your initial visit will include a professional assessment of the visible thread veins on your legs. We’ll discuss your concerns, review any symptoms (such as heaviness or cramps) and evaluate suitability for treatment.
Treatment day
Our experienced practitioners will answer your questions and begin treatment only when you’re comfortable. A fine needle injects a sclerosing solution into the affected veins, causing them to close and redirect blood to healthier vessels. Multiple veins can often be treated in one session. The in-clinic procedure requires no general anaesthetic and is well tolerated. Afterward, we’ll apply bandaging to the area, which should remain on for 24–48 hours.
Aftercare and recovery
After removing the bandaging, wear compression garments or stockings to support healing and enhance results — snug joggers are also fine. You can resume most normal activities immediately, but stick to gentle walking and avoid strenuous exercise for a short time. Visible improvement appears over several weeks, with some veins fading quickly and others taking a few months to resolve.
Future treatments
Full healing will occur over 4-6 weeks. We welcome you back to the clinic for consecutive treatments, should this be required. Some veins may require multiple treatments.

What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a simple injection treatment that collapses and fades unwanted thread and spider veins, restoring clearer, smoother-looking legs. These small red, blue, or purple veins appear near the skin’s surface on the thighs, calves, or ankles, forming fine lines or web-like patterns. While often treated for cosmetic reasons, some people may also experience mild aching, burning, or cramping.
What are the Benefits of Sclerotherapy treatments?
Visibly Clearer Skin
Sclerotherapy dramatically reduces or eliminates visible spider and thread veins, restoring a smoother, more even skin tone on the legs.
Fast Recovery Time
There’s minimal downtime — most people can return to daily activities immediately after treatment, with simple aftercare like wearing compression stockings.
Long-Lasting Results
Once treated, thread veins are permanently sealed and naturally absorbed by the body, with results that can last for years with proper care.
Boosted Confidence
By fading unwanted veins, patients often feel more confident wearing skirts, shorts or swimwear — no longer needing to hide their legs.
Minimally Invasive Treatment
The procedure uses only tiny injections and requires no surgery or general anaesthetic, making it quick, comfortable, and easy to fit into your routine.
Safe and Clinically Proven
Sclerotherapy has been performed worldwide for decades, with an excellent safety record when carried out by qualified medical professionals.
Why do Spider and Thread veins happen?
While the precise cause of spider and thread veins is not always clear, common contributing factors include:
- Prolonged standing or sitting, which increases pressure in the leg veins.
- Age-related weakening of vein walls and valves.
- Hormonal changes ( with pregnancy), family history, and other lifestyle factors.
Although these small veins themselves are benign in most cases, many people seek treatment because of their appearance or associated discomfort.

Sclerotherapy FAQS
- Many patients see a significant reduction in visible thread veins, and associated symptoms (like achiness or night cramps) often improve.
- Although the treated veins typically don’t return, new thread veins can appear over time — maintenance or repeat sessions might be recommended for best long-term appearance.
- Because individual veins vary in size and complexity, results can differ from person to person; realistic expectations are key.
You’ll usually start to see results within 3 to 6 weeks for smaller veins, with continued fading over several months as the body naturally absorbs the treated veins.
Most patients describe the procedure as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. You may feel a brief stinging or tingling sensation when the solution is injected.
The number of sessions depends on how many thread veins you have and their size. Many people achieve excellent results in 1–3 sessions spaced a 3-6 weeks apart.
To support healing, avoid hot baths, saunas, sun exposure, and high-intensity exercise for a few days. We do however recommended a 20 minute walk post procedure to start the healing process. Wearing compression stockings as advised helps maximise results.
The treated thread veins won’t return, but new ones can appear over time. Occasional maintenance sessions can help keep your legs looking smooth and vein-free.
If you’re bothered by visible thread veins on your legs — affecting how you feel in summer dresses, shorts or simply impacting your confidence — our sclerotherapy treatment offers a safe, effective and minimally invasive option.
We’ll guide you through every step: assessment, treatment, aftercare and results. Please contact us to arrange your personalised consultation and find out how we can help you reveal smoother, clearer-looking legs.
Sclerotherapy for thread veins on the legs is generally very safe when performed by an experienced professional:
- Side effects may include mild bruising, temporary skin discoloration, tiny brown lines, slight swelling or itching at injection sites.
- Rarely, more significant complications can occur — this is why assessment and aftercare are important.
- The procedure is suited to the cosmetic treatment of thread veins; underlying vein issues (if present) may need separate evaluation and treatment.
