The sun is shining and so are you! As everyone gets ready to make the most of each and every time the sun shows itself this summer, we’re thinking about skin preparation and protection for the season ahead. Vitamin C provides a variety of skincare benefits, but did you know that it also helps to protect your skin from UV damage and can boost the effectiveness of your SPF? We outline below why Vitamin C is our must have accessory this sunny season.
What does Vitamin C do?
Often hailed as one of the best ingredients on the market, Vitamin C is the key to maintaining a healthy glowing complexion. With antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties, it reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and discolouration. If dull or lacklustre skin is your concern, Vitamin C is the solution. It works to brighten thanks to its ability to inhibit melanin production which gives our skin pigment, meaning that through daily use you will start to notice a brighter, lighter complexion along with fading of existing dark spots.
Vitamin C + Sunscreen = Double Protection
Whether you’re jetting-off on a summer holiday or simply setting up your deck chair in the back garden, SPF should always be your first choice of companion. But why should you combine SPF and Vitamin C?
Oxidative stress occurs when the skin is exposed to pollutants and environmental aggressors, such as UV rays. This stress can cause lines and wrinkles to form, as electrons attack healthy cells and change their structure. When you layer them together, your Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant to combat oxidative stress and give your skin extra UV protection benefits alongside your normal SPF. In return, sun cream helps to prevent your Vitamin C from oxidising, making it more effective. Ultimately, combining the two will combat sun damage, protect the skins condition and slow the ageing process.
So how do you incorporate Vitamin C into your skincare routine?
Vitamin C is suitable for daily use and should be applied in the morning after washing your face. A little goes a long way so you only need a few drops. Once you have rubbed in your Vitamin C you can then apply your moisturiser. Follow this up with your sun cream and you’re good to go!
The popularity of Vitamin C is both a blessing and a curse as it makes it hard to know which products work and which don’t. We have several different Vitamin C serums and creams depending on your skin type, so just ask your practitioner which one will deliver the best results for you.
And what Sunscreen should you use?
When deciding on a sun cream, it’s important to opt for a broad-spectrum formula as this will provide defence against both UVB and UVA rays. It should also be at least SPF 30, however if you have fair skin or know you will be spending a significant amount of time in the sun we would always recommend SPF 50.
We have a wide range of sun protection products available at the clinic and what our practitioners recommend varies depending on your skin and your goals. Our selection of sunscreens come in multiple formulations to suit all skin types and lifestyles, so just ask your practitioner what they would suggest for your skin during your appointment.
